A bacterial riboflavin hydrolase.

Riboflavin is known to be decomposed by specific bacteria. Foster (1,2) showed that the ribityl portion of riboflavin was oxidized by living cells of Pseudomonas ribo$avina, leaving the heterocyclic ring, 7, %dimethylalloxazine (lumichrome), intact. Later, Hou (3) found that lumichrome accumulated as riboflavin disappeared in a culture of tubercle bacilli to which the vitamin had been added. The present paper deals with the demonstration and characteristics of a bacterial cell-free enzyme which hydrolyzes riboflavin to lumichrome and ribitol. The name riboflavin hydrolase is proposed for this new enzyme.
